Queensland’s agricultural industry is seeing a new wave of female leaders step up, with the first face-to-face training event for the Queensland Women in Agriculture Leadership (QWAL) program held in Brisbane on 26–27 March.
Funded by the Queensland Government’s Women in Industry grant, secured by AgForce and delivered by AgForce Training, the 12-month program gives women in agriculture the training and mentorship to strengthen their leadership skills and take on influential roles in the sector.
“Our participants come from all corners of Queensland—Burketown, Longreach, Dirranbandi and beyond—each with a unique background, but all with the same drive to make a difference” said Kelly Ostwald, Chair of AgForce Training.
“Bringing them together in person helps build strong connections and ensures they can learn from each other as they step into bigger roles.”
The program includes six training events aligned with the Certificate IV in Leadership and Management, blending in-person and online learning to fit around the demands of farm life and work. The first module, Leading Self, focused on self-awareness, emotional intelligence and building the mindset needed to lead with confidence.
In addition to training, participants met their mentors for an afternoon session and networking drinks, strengthening relationships that will support them throughout their leadership journey.
Nicole Chiesa, a sugarcane producer from North QLD, said the program is already having an impact.
“I’ve learned that leadership begins with knowing yourself and tuning into my own strengths, values and motivations. The connections and networking have also been a huge advantage, giving me new perspectives and support,” said Nicole. “I’m excited to see where this journey will take me and the other women over the next 12 months.”
While this event marks the official start of training, the work continues as participants develop their mentoring relationships and set personal leadership goals.
“Mentorship is a game-changer for this program,” Kelly Ostwald added. “We’ve got a great cross section of mentors from across the sector giving up their time.”
“They have walked this path before and are passionate about sharing their knowledge and supporting the next generation of leaders.”
With momentum building from this first event, QWAL is set to help these women take the next step in their leadership journey — whether that’s leading teams, shaping policy or driving change in their communities. Future training sessions will laser in on critical areas such as developing workplace culture, managing risk, operational planning and ensuring safe and sustainable practices.
