10 December 2024. Paul McIntosh, Pulse Australia and WeedSmart

Last week was a huge week delivering the very popular Australian Mungbean Association agronomy and marketing roadshow events throughout NSW.

As the team of Lisa Kelly, plant pathologist from DPI Qld, our retired very senior entomologist friend in Hugh Brier and myself travelled around, I was reminded at how much these snap two hour agronomy events really do provide solid agronomic knowledge on Mungs.

My thoughts also reflected on the Australian Mungbean Assc or AMA long term commitment to run these Best Management Practice courses on Mungbeans.

This two day course is going to be held at the Qld DPI in Toowoomba on 29 and 30 January 2025. It features all the modules depicted in the photo and always needs prior registration by potential attendees.

I also reflected on how valuable this course is, being delivered by Mungbean “experts “ in the true meaning of this adjective.

Most of our cropping knowledge builds up over the years or decades and is gleaned from others and experience, plus ad hoc field days.

The Mungbean industry has run these complete valuable knowledge bank events since the early 2000’s, under the initial leadership of my departed mate in John Slatter.  Mike Lucy formerly of the Qld DPI , was also a major part of this Pulse Australia and AMA push for agronomists and even many farmers, to look at the growing and marketing of Mungbeans for our large export market of clean and green Mungbean crop.

The older manual shown here is now full of reviewed and robust 2024 knowledge, delivered on these two big days by a great team of researchers or industry experts and is highly valued by course participants.
Needless to say, course participants always learn more than just about Mungbeans, as I always remind them that whilst Mungs are a great short rotation break crop, they are part of a farming system here this northern region.

It certainly appears that Mungbeans are going to be the “flavour of the month “ this summer season for many in our farming community. With solid end product pricing, this short and quick does the trick legume crop certainly fits the 2024/25 bill for many growers and their agronomic advisors.

Have a look at those module titles and decide if this course is something for you as an agronomist or part of a farming enterprise. Certainly, you need to register as numbers are always capped for this popular event and feel free to contact myself for any more information.

That’s all folks.
