Applications now open for agriculture student bursary
Friday, 20 Jan 2017

Southern Inland Queensland students working toward a career in agriculture or agribusiness can now apply for a special bursary to assist with their studies.

AgForce General President and Mitchell cattle and grains producer Grant Maudsley will officially announce the opening of applications for the 2017 Gus McGown Memorial Bursary at the Mitchell & District Members Dinner tonight.

Mr Maudsley said the bursary was named after passionate industry representative and advocate Gus McGown, who lost his long-running battle with cancer in 2014.

"The memorial bursary winner will receive $5000 to go towards funding to assist tuition fees for an accredited qualification, undergraduate study or post graduate levels within Australia," Mr Maudsley said.

"Gus was a valued contributor to a range of AgForce, government and non-government organisation boards and committees, and he developed respect among many stakeholders who constantly sought his opinions on pastoral land management.

"This bursary recognizes Gus' commitment to the pastoral industry while also supporting the next generation get their start in agriculture."

Maranoa Graziers Trust Chair Don Compagnoni said Gus became a very close friend when they formed the first environment committee under the United Graziers Association (UGA) and sat on various committees and boards together until his death.

"Gus was a passionate advocate who was known to blind the bureaucrats with science," Mr Compagnoni said.

"This bursary is a chance to remember Gus and all the work he did for the Maranoa region."

The bursary is sponsored by the Maranoa Graziers Trust and administered by AgForce.

It is open to students with links to the AgForce's Southern inland Queensland region and applications are open until February 24th 2017.
