Green heart of agriculture beats in the heart of Brisbane
Wednesday, 8 Aug 2018

An enthusiastic group of farmers and supporters gathered in the Centre Ring at the Brisbane Ekka Showgrounds today to help make the green heart of agriculture beat in the heart of the city.

Clad in green shirts, the group formed a giant green heart shape as a way of promoting a positive and iconic image of Queensland farmers. *(Link to photos below)

The idea was the brainchild of farmer, bush blogger and photographer Amanda Salisbury, and was organised with the support of AgForce, the peak representative body for Queensland’s beef, sheep and wool, and grains producers.

AgForce CEO Michael Guerin said farming was at the heart of Australia and it was important to build connections between the city and the bush.

“We all know farmers love and care for their land and are true environmentalists at heart,” he said.

“While many farmers have been hit hard by drought, we are strong and resilient people and work hard to consistently produce great food and fibre for consumers both in Australia and overseas.

“The Ekka is a fantastic time of year when city meets country and we want to encourage positive conversations and interactions between farmers and those who eat and wear what we produce.”

Mr Guerin said AgForce was joining with Meat and Livestock Australia and the team behind the ‘A True Story: From the Heart of Qld’ Facebook page and website to man a stall in the Agricultural Hall at the Ekka starting this Friday.

“Queensland farmers look forward to talking to show-goers about how we manage our land and produce clean, green, high-quality food and fibre,” he said.

“There will be veggie growing kits, badge making for the kids, information displays and farmers on hand to answer questions.

“We want to say a special thank you to Ekka organisers for allowing today’s photo on the Centre Ring and for everything they do to celebrate agriculture.”
