Queensland grain growers wanting to learn about the latest research happening in the lab and on the farm are being urged to take part in an industry tour on the Darling Downs next week.

AgForce Grains President Wayne Newton said the industry tour being held on Friday 20 July would include visits to a Department of Agriculture and Fisheries research station, a seed testing laboratory and a grains farm.

“The Queensland grains industry is always looking to grow and adapt through innovation and technology, with research helping to transform the way we farm,” he said.

“The AgForce Grains Industry Tour will include a visit to the Hermitage Research Station at Warwick to look at trial work on grain storage and fumigation, as well as breeding programs for sorghum and pulses.

“To see how this all translates on farm, the tour will visit Petersen Grains at Killarney, while it will conclude with a visit to AgEtal, a state-of-the-art grain and seed testing laboratory in Toowoomba so growers can get a better understanding of the benefits of testing to farmers’ productivity.”

Mr Newton said the industry tour would be held in the lead up to the grains industry’s ‘night of nights’ – the Queensland Grains Gala Dinner – which was being held at the Clifford Park Racecourse in Toowoomba on Friday 20 July.

ABC Radio Brisbane Breakfast host and former Queensland Country Hour presenter Craig Zonca will be the Master of Ceremonies for the gala dinner, which will include musical entertainment and a special whisky tasting event hosted by Moet Hennessy Australia.

“The Queensland Grains Gala Dinner is a fabulous event where everyone with an interest in the industry – plant breeders, researchers/scientists, suppliers, consultants, producers, traders and buyers – can come together in one place for one night to celebrate grains,” Mr Newton said.

“In keeping with the grains theme of the night, dinner guests will have the opportunity to sample a range of premium whiskies, including three varieties that are previous ‘World Whisky of the Year’ award winners.”

Mr Newton thanked all the sponsors who helped make the event possible including Vanderfield (Diamond), GrainCorp, NAB Agribusiness, Telstra, Wideland Ag and Construction, Crowe Howarth, Grains Research and Development Corpration (Platinum), IOR Petroleum, Ritchie Bros., Robinson Grain (Gold), Farmarco, Port of Brisbane (Silver) and Grains BMP (industry sponsor).

He also thanked the Grains Research and Development Corporation for sponsoring the industry tour and a complimentary bus service.
