AgForce Queensland has welcomed Barnaby Joyce's appointment as leader of the National Party and Deputy Prime Minister.

AgForce General President Grant Maudsley said the selection of Mr Joyce meant agriculture in Queensland would continue to have a strong voice in the senior ranks of the Federal Government.

"AgForce has enjoyed a close working relationship with Barnaby, both through his strong ties to the agricultural sector and his awareness of rural issues," Mr Maudsley said.

"He is particularly aware of the challenges we face in rural Queensland, serving for eight years as a Senator.

"As the agricultural industry continues to grow it will become crucial to the health of the Australian economy and needs senior representation at the national level.

"I look forward to working with Barnaby to advocate for regional Queensland and continue to ensure the Federal Government delivers on the programs outlined in the Northern Australia and Agricultural white papers."

Mr Maudsley said thanks to outgoing Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss, who announced his retirement from Parliament last night.

"Warren has been a great servant for regional Queensland, not just the Wide Bay area," he said.

"He has supported our industry through tough times and good and I wish him all the best for life after politics."
