AGFORCE Queensland has congratulated new Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and
committed to working with her and her government to ensure we have a prosperous
agriculture sector.
"After a confusing time for Queenslanders over the last two weeks it is
good to have some clarity around who will lead our state," AgForce General
President, Grant Maudsley, said.
"We congratulate Ms Palaszczuk, new Minister for Agriculture Bill Byrne
and Minister for State Development, Natural Resources and Mines, Anthony Lynham
on their positions.
"It is now our highest priority to meet as soon as possible with each of
the Ministers who have a portfolio relating to primary production and to
outline the issues and policies which are most important to agriculture in
Queensland."
These areas include:
- Dealing
with 'short term' challenges, for example ongoing drought and reduction of
red tape and regulatory burden;
- Securing
the long-term future of agriculture, for example protection of prime
farming and grazing land;
- Managing
climate variability, for example cost-of-production insurance schemes to
manage climate risk and continued funding of climatic and season
forecasting research;
- Maintaining
Queensland's clean, green credentials, for example disease preparedness
and the retention of biosecurity staff so as to ensure product integrity
and reputation in key markets;
- Investing
in our industry, for example the introduction of a biofuels mandate and
critical investment in transport infrastructure.
"Agriculture is one of the most important sectors
of the Queensland economy, the lifeblood of rural communities and the
livelihood of thousands of farming families across the state," Mr Maudsley
said.
"We now look to the new State Government to acknowledge this importance,
to engage with primary producers to understand the industry and to create
balanced policy which seeks to facilitate the prosperity of the sector."
